Nintendo’s Game & Watch Gallery series is one of the most clever and historically significant compilation projects in gaming. Released in 1997 for the original Game Boy, Game & Watch Gallery 2 packages five classic Game & Watch LCD titles into a single cartridge, offering both faithful Classic mode recreations and charming Mario-themed Modern mode remakes. It is a love letter to Nintendo’s pre-NES handheld history and one of the finest value propositions in the Game Boy library.
The five games included are Helmet, Vermin, Chef, Ball, and Donkey Kong Jr. — a fantastic selection that covers different gameplay styles, from reflexive dodging to juggling and timing puzzles. Each title can be played in Classic mode (original Game & Watch LCD presentation) or Modern mode (updated with Mario characters and animated sprites). Both modes offer A and B difficulty settings, with B mode generally being significantly faster and more challenging.
The Classic mode versions are precise recreations of the original Game & Watch games, complete with their distinctive fixed-position LCD aesthetic. For gaming historians and collectors, playing these originals is a genuinely valuable experience — these were the games that defined portable gaming before the Game Boy existed.
The Modern remakes are a joy. Chef sees Mario juggling food to keep it from burning; Helmet has Mario dodging wrenches from a construction site. The transformations are inventive and the Game Boy hardware handles the animation smoothly, making these tiny games feel polished and current even by mid-90s standards.
Each game records a high score, giving players a persistent personal challenge to return to. The simple but endlessly replayable nature of these games means that chasing a new personal best is always compelling — exactly the kind of addictive pick-up-and-play design that made Game & Watch systems successful in the first place.
The game runs on the original Game Boy and looks clean and readable. Modern mode sprites are charming and well-animated given the hardware. The audio work captures the electronic bleeps and bloops of the original Game & Watch systems in Classic mode, while Modern mode features bright, cheerful music appropriate to each game’s theme.
The Game & Watch Gallery series was both critically and commercially successful, and Gallery 2 continued the excellent standard set by the first entry. These compilations introduced an entire generation to the origins of Nintendo’s portable empire and ensured the Game & Watch legacy was not lost to time. The series helped establish the Game Boy as a platform that could offer genuine historical significance alongside contemporary entertainment.
Game & Watch Gallery 2 is a compact masterpiece of retro preservation. Five excellent games, two modes each, beautiful Modern remakes, and a window into the history of portable gaming — all on one cartridge. It remains one of the most satisfying Game Boy releases for players of any age.
