Game & Watch Gallery 2 is a wonderful compilation developed by Tose and published by Nintendo, first released in Japan in 1997 as a monochrome Game Boy title before arriving in North America and Europe in November 1998 as a fully colourised Game Boy Color release. It is technically the third entry in the Game & Watch Gallery series, though numbered as the second for most markets. The compilation celebrates Nintendo’s own pre-Game Boy history: the Game & Watch devices of the early 1980s were the company’s first steps into handheld gaming, single-game LCD handhelds that frequently doubled as a clock and alarm, and revisiting them via Game Boy was Nintendo’s way of honouring the roots of portable play.

Five games are included from the start: Parachute, Helmet, Chef, Vermin and Donkey Kong, with the sixth title — Ball, Nintendo’s very first Game & Watch game from 1980 — unlockable through gameplay. As with the other entries in the Gallery series, each game offers two modes: Classic mode faithfully replicates the original LCD game experience, while Modern mode reimagines each title with updated Mario franchise characters, enhanced graphics, new gameplay mechanics and colourful music. To unlock everything in the game’s museum feature, players must master all six titles across both modes and all difficulty settings, earning up to 120 stars total — a genuinely demanding long-term challenge that kept dedicated players busy for months. The museum itself contains animations, audio and trivia celebrating the history of the Game & Watch format.
Game & Watch Gallery 2 was an instant Game Boy Color launch-window favourite and remains one of the most charming Nintendo compilation releases ever made. It manages to make extremely simple, 40-year-old games feel fresh and engaging through the quality of its Modern mode redesigns, and it doubles as a loving preservation of gaming history in the palm of your hand.
