Castlevania: The Adventure was the first Castlevania game produced for the Game Boy, arriving in Japan in October 1989 and in North America by the end of that same year. Developed and published by Konami, it launched as one of the most technically impressive early titles on the platform and brought the dark, gothic atmosphere of the NES series to Nintendo’s handheld. The game is set a century before the events of the original Castlevania and a century after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, following Christopher Belmont — ancestor of Simon and descendant of Trevor — as he ventures into Dracula’s castle to end the vampire lord’s renewed reign of terror once again.

The gameplay preserves the fundamentals of the Belmont legacy: Christopher wields the iconic Vampire Killer whip through four distinct stages filled with classic Castlevania enemies including axe-throwing knights, Medusa heads, skeletons and the undead. Notably, Christopher cannot collect sub-weapons as in the console games; instead, his whip can be powered up through orbs found in candles to progress through three levels of strength — losing damage returns it to its basic form, adding a layer of careful play to proceedings. The game runs at a slower pace than its NES counterparts, a deliberate choice to combat screen ghosting on the original Game Boy’s passive matrix display, but the atmosphere — aided by a brooding, memorable soundtrack — is unmistakably Castlevania. The game was later re-released in colour as part of the Konami GB Collection compilations, and its legacy endures through the Castlevania Anniversary Collection released in 2019.
