Bomberman Max: Red Challenger is one half of Hudson Soft’s twin-version Game Boy Color release from 2000, the counterpart to the Blue Champion edition. In Red Challenger, players take on the role of Max — a brand new character making his franchise debut here — rather than the series’ longstanding hero Bomberman. Despite sharing the same story, the two versions each have version-exclusive Charaboms to collect, encouraging link-up trading between players. The premise sends Max across five planets, each one overrun by mechanical creatures created by a rogue supercomputer called Brain that has corrupted the wildlife under its control. Dr. Ein dispatches both Bomberman and Max on a race to shut down Brain and rescue the Charaboms — small elemental creatures that serve as both companions and battle partners.

Alongside the classic Bomberman grid-based puzzle-action gameplay — placing bombs to blast enemies and clear paths through destructible mazes — Bomberman Max introduces the Charabom system as its centrepiece innovation. There are 30 Charaboms to find, rescue and collect across the game’s five worlds, each with an elemental type (Fire, Water, Electric, Earth or Combined) and a unique special attack. Players can combine compatible Charaboms to create new, more powerful ones and challenge friends via the Game Boy Color’s link cable in Charabom battles where elemental matchups determine the outcome. Notably the GBC’s infrared sensor is used to access a hidden area for a special minigame. The game also features eight-directional movement, a relatively rare feature for a Game Boy Color title.

Bomberman Max: Red Challenger is a rich, content-packed entry in the series that rewarded players who committed fully to the Charabom collection system. The combination of traditional Bomberman puzzle-action with the creature-collecting meta-game gives it a depth and replayability that makes it one of the most feature-complete Bomberman titles released on a handheld.
