The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX is the enhanced Game Boy Color re-release of one of the most beloved Zelda games ever made. Originally launched in 1993 for the original Game Boy, Link’s Awakening was notable for being the first Zelda game to venture away from Hyrule entirely — Link finds himself washed up on the mysterious Koholint Island after a violent storm at sea, and must collect eight Instruments of the Sirens to wake the island’s slumbering Wind Fish and find a way home. The story is surprisingly deep for a handheld title of its era, full of quirky characters and a genuinely poignant ending that still resonates with fans decades later.

The DX version, released in 1998, adds full Game Boy Color support with vibrant palettes bringing each dungeon and overworld zone to life. Most notably, it introduces an entirely new dungeon — the Color Dungeon — exclusive to the GBC version, which rewards players with a powerful tunic upgrade. The gameplay blends top-down exploration, puzzle-solving, and action combat across eight main dungeons, with plenty of secrets, a trading sequence side-quest, and tight controls that hold up beautifully. It was developed by a small internal Nintendo team who had been tasked with simply porting Super Mario Land 2, but ended up creating an entirely original adventure instead.

Link’s Awakening DX is widely regarded as one of the finest games on the Game Boy platform, receiving universal acclaim on its original release and again with the DX revision. Nintendo themselves acknowledged its lasting legacy by releasing a full HD remake for Nintendo Switch in 2019, but for retro enthusiasts the GBC cartridge remains a treasure in its own right.
