Wario Land 3 is one of the finest platformers ever released for the Game Boy Color, arriving in 2000 and cementing Nintendo R&D1’s reputation for inventive handheld design. The game drops Mario’s greedy rival into a mysterious world hidden inside a magical music box, where he must track down five scattered music boxes to free a trapped figure — and, naturally, pocket as much treasure as possible along the way. The world is divided into four cardinal areas spanning 25 sprawling stages, each packed with colour and personality that truly shows off what the Game Boy Color hardware could achieve.

The world is divided into four cardinal areas spanning 25 sprawling stages, each packed with colour and personality that truly shows off what the Game Boy Color hardware could achieve.
The gameplay is a brilliant blend of platforming, puzzle-solving and Metroidvania-style exploration. Rather than a health bar, Wario is essentially indestructible — enemy attacks transform him in unexpected ways, making him fatter, on fire, or zombified, and these bizarre states are often the key to unlocking hidden areas. Each stage contains four colour-coded treasure chests, and many can only be opened once Wario has obtained a specific ability from elsewhere in the game, encouraging repeated visits and rewarding exploration. The day-and-night cycle adds another layer of depth, with certain paths and enemies only appearing at particular times. On top of all that there is a charming golf minigame woven into the adventure. Wario Land 3 received highly positive reviews on release and has only grown in reputation since, widely regarded as one of the very best Game Boy Color titles.
