Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Radical Rescue, developed and published by Konami and released in 1993, is the final chapter in the Game Boy TMNT trilogy — and the most daring of the three. While the first two games were straightforward side-scrolling beat-em-ups, Radical Rescue threw out that playbook entirely and embraced a Metroidvania-style structure that sets it apart as one of the most ambitious licensed games on the platform. Instead of a linear level-by-level progression, players navigate a sprawling interconnected world, unlocking new areas as they rescue their fellow turtles and gain access to their individual special abilities.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Radical Rescue, developed and published by Konami and released in 1993, is the final chapter in the Game Boy TMNT trilogy — and the most daring of the three. Instead of a linear level-by-level progression, players navigate a sprawling interconnected world, unlocking new areas as they rescue their fellow turtles and gain access to their individual special abilities.
The premise sees all four turtles captured by Shredder — a refreshing reversal of the usual formula — and tasks the player with controlling Michelangelo on a mission to free his brothers one by one. Each rescued turtle brings a new ability to the party: Donatello can reach high ledges, Raphael can cling to walls, and Leonardo can attack while ducking, meaning backtracking to previously inaccessible areas is a constant and rewarding part of progression. The game takes clear inspiration from classics like Metroid and Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, delivering a simplified but genuinely fun take on the exploration-action format. Konami’s technical team scaled down the character sprites compared to the first two games to accommodate the more open level design, and the result is a game that feels distinctly different from anything else on the system at the time.
Radical Rescue represents Konami at their most adventurous with the TMNT license on Game Boy, and for fans of Metroidvania games it is an essential and often overlooked find. It rewards exploration, patience and the satisfaction of gradually unlocking new paths — all wrapped in the colourful, chaotic energy of the golden era of Turtle-mania.
