Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Back from the Sewers was the second entry in Konami’s Game Boy TMNT trilogy, released in 1991, and it took everything that made Fall of the Foot Clan enjoyable and significantly expanded upon it. The game features six lengthy stages — one more than its predecessor — with Shredder, Krang and their Dimension X forces once again causing chaos across New York City. Where the first game kept all four turtles functionally identical, Back from the Sewers made player choice matter: each turtle has distinct differences in attack range and speed, giving repeat playthroughs a genuinely different feel depending on which hero you pick.

The level variety is a major step up from the original. Alongside the familiar left-to-right brawling through city environments, the game introduces a thrilling autoscrolling skateboard stage and an elevator section that shifts the perspective to create a sense of depth reminiscent of the famous TMNT arcade games. The slide manoeuvre replaces the shuriken throw from the first game, adding an evasive option that also functions as an attack against low enemies. Visually and aurally, Back from the Sewers surpassed an already excellent first entry, with more detailed sprite work and a soundtrack that pushed the Game Boy’s sound chip to impressive new heights. The difficulty is also notched up a touch compared to Fall of the Foot Clan, providing more of a challenge for players who breezed through the first game.
Back from the Sewers stands as a confident, well-crafted sequel that shows Konami growing in confidence with both the hardware and the license. It is a thoroughly enjoyable action game that captures the chaotic energy of the animated series and makes the most of what the original Game Boy could do — a perfect companion piece to the other games in this beloved trilogy.
