Snow Brothers on the Game Boy — released as Snow Bros. Jr. — is a port of Toaplan’s charming 1990 arcade game, a platform classic that drew obvious comparison to Taito’s Bubble Bobble and became a beloved staple of its era. The original arcade game starred snowman twins Nick and Tom as they battled through 50 stages, hurling snowballs to stun enemies and then rolling those snowballs across the screen to knock out as many foes as possible in satisfying chain reactions. Every tenth stage brought a boss encounter, and the whole game was wrapped in bright, colourful visuals and an immediately memorable soundtrack. The Game Boy version was developed by Dual and published in Japan by Naxat Soft in May 1991 and in North America by Capcom in January 1992.

Snow Bros. Jr. sensibly adapts the one-player experience for the handheld format, adjusting the story so that one of the twin snowmen has been kidnapped and the other must set off to rescue him. The core gameplay loop is faithfully preserved: cover enemies in snow to transform them into large balls, then kick or roll those balls into other enemies for bonus points and chain reactions. The more enemies a single snowball wipes out, the higher the score multiplier, encouraging players to set up elaborate combos across the level platforms. The absence of cooperative play is the one notable omission from the arcade version, but the Game Boy port compensates with tight controls and a presentation that holds up very well for the hardware constraints of the time.

For fans of Bubble Bobble, Tumble Pop and fixed-screen platformer games from the early 1990s, Snow Bros. Jr. is a delightful and satisfying experience. It captures everything that made Toaplan’s arcade hit so endearing — the cheerful aesthetic, the strategic snowball-throwing and the deeply rewarding pursuit of perfect chain reactions.
