Shantae is one of the most technically impressive and creatively ambitious games ever made for the Game Boy Color, developed by WayForward Technologies and published by Capcom exclusively in North America in June 2002 — arriving so late in the platform’s life that many players missed it entirely on original release. The game follows the adventures of Shantae, a half-genie guardian of Scuttle Town, as she pursues the villainous pirate Risky Boots across the fantastical land of Sequin Land after Risky steals a magical steam engine from the local Relic Hunter. Designed by Matt Bozon based on a character created by Erin Bozon, the game was originally conceived for the SNES before being redesigned around the GBC’s capabilities.

What WayForward achieved on the hardware is frankly astonishing. The game features parallax scrolling, transparency effects and fluid character animation that simply shouldn’t be possible on Game Boy Color hardware, all made possible by a custom graphics engine the team built from scratch. Shantae’s core mechanic — using belly dances to transform into animals like monkeys and elephants to navigate the world — blends Metroidvania exploration with action-platformer combat in a way that feels years ahead of its time. The game’s rarity on original release made it a genuine collector’s item, and its legacy only grew over time as WayForward went on to build a full franchise around the character. Playing on a Game Boy Advance also activates a brightness enhancement and bonus content the developers added specifically for that hardware.
