R-Type DX is an outstanding Game Boy Color release from 1999 that brings together two of the greatest side-scrolling shooters ever created — R-Type and R-Type II — on a single cartridge, each available in both classic monochrome and enhanced colour versions. The original R-Type launched in arcades in 1987 courtesy of Irem and immediately established itself as one of the most technically and creatively ambitious shooters of its generation. Its influence on the shoot-em-up genre is immeasurable: the Force Pod weapon system — a detachable energy orb that can be docked to the front or rear of the ship, charged with energy, or launched as a projectile — was wholly original and demanded entirely new strategic thinking from players. The game was renowned for its extraordinary difficulty, its H.R. Giger-inspired biological level design, and its bosses that genuinely had to be studied and memorised to defeat.

R-Type II followed in 1989 and pushed the formula further with new stages, more complex enemy patterns and an even steeper challenge curve. Having both games on a single Game Boy Color cartridge made R-Type DX an exceptional value proposition at launch, and the addition of full colour to both titles gives them a visual freshness that holds up very well. The DX cart was published by Nintendo in North America and Europe and by Epoch in Japan, giving the game wide distribution for fans to enjoy. The Game Boy Color version was praised for how faithfully it reproduced the gameplay of the original titles given the hardware limitations — Irem and the port developers clearly understood what made both games tick.
For anyone who loves classic arcade shooters, R-Type DX is among the finest examples of the genre on any Nintendo handheld. The combination of two full games, the legendary Force Pod system and relentlessly inventive level design makes this a cartridge that rewards repeated play and demands genuine skill to master.
