Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: Here Comes Team Rocket — known in Japan as Pokémon Card GB2: Great Rocket-Dan Sanjō! — is the direct sequel to the first Pokémon Trading Card Game for Game Boy Color, and was released exclusively in Japan in 2001. Developed by Hudson Soft and published by The Pokémon Company, the game picks up immediately where its predecessor left off: Team Great Rocket invades the Card Island, steals the legendary cards from the Grand Masters, and takes control of all the card clubs. Players must defeat four GR commanders to assemble the GR Coin, then board a blimp to GR Island for the game’s climactic second half — a significantly expanded structure compared to the original. The sequel also introduced the option to play as either the returning male protagonist Mark or a brand new female character named Mint.

In terms of card content, the game is enormously generous: 441 cards are available, spanning the Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, and Team Rocket expansions alongside a substantial selection of Japanese-exclusive Vending Machine promotional cards. The AI has been noticeably improved over the first game, with opponents building more strategically constructed decks, making smarter use of Trainer cards, and swapping out endangered Pokémon rather than leaving them to be knocked out. The second island’s club masters introduce special house rules for duels — constraints like using only specific energy types or fielding four copies of a particular Pokémon — adding creative challenge layers that experienced players will relish. The game uses the card rules of the early TCG era, including some mechanics that were later revised, which makes it an interesting time capsule of the competitive format.

Because the game never received an official Western release, fan translation patches have been the primary way English-speaking players have experienced it, and the quality of those translations has been highly praised by the community. For TCG fans and Game Boy Color enthusiasts, this sequel is a treasure — more content, more cards, better AI, and a more ambitious story than the already well-loved first game.
