Pokemon Sapphire launched in Japan in November 2002 and internationally in 2003, introducing the world to the lush and diverse Hoenn region on the Game Boy Advance. Co-developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, Sapphire represented a significant leap forward for the franchise — bringing 135 brand new Pokemon designs to life, introducing the double battle system, and expanding the mechanics of individual Pokemon with the addition of abilities and natures. The Hoenn region itself is distinctive for its vast ocean routes and tropical landscapes, giving the game a strikingly different feel from the Kanto and Johto adventures that preceded it.

In Sapphire, the villainous Team Aqua seeks to awaken the legendary water Pokemon Kyogre and flood the landmasses of Hoenn, creating an expanding ocean they believe will benefit wild Pokemon. Players must stop them while conquering eight gyms and working towards the Elite Four challenge. Sapphire introduced Latias as the version-exclusive roaming legendary, Pokemon Contests as a competitive performance alternative to battles, and Secret Bases allowing players to personalise hideouts scattered across the region. The game could link with FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald via cable to trade and battle, and with Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD on the GameCube to expand the available Pokemon roster. Sapphire is a rich and imaginative adventure that remains one of the most fondly remembered entries in the entire series.
