Description

Pokemon Battle Factory is a ROM hack of Pokemon Red for the Game Boy, created by developer Shanty Town and released in January 2014. It transplants the beloved Battle Factory facility from the Battle Frontier — first introduced in Pokemon Emerald — all the way back into the Generation I engine, creating a unique challenge-focused experience entirely unlike a traditional Pokemon adventure. There is no overworld to explore, no gym badges to collect, and no rival storyline: the entire game is dedicated to the art of competitive battling.

The structure works like the classic Battle Factory: choose three Pokemon from a pool of six random rentals, battle through a streak of seven trainers, and after each win, optionally swap one of your rental Pokemon for one belonging to the trainer you just defeated. Nine progressively harder class tiers keep the difficulty rising, each culminating in a tough Factory Head boss battle. The lack of items during battles and the rotation of rental Pokemon ensures that every run feels different, demanding adaptability and true knowledge of Pokemon type matchups and move synergies. It is a refreshingly stripped-back take on the Pokemon formula that rewards skill over grinding.
