Gargoyle’s Quest II: The Demon Darkness on the Game Boy is a conversion of Capcom’s 1992 NES action-adventure, and it sits within one of the most inventive spin-off series of the 8-bit era. The Gargoyle’s Quest games star Firebrand — the Red Arremer demon who appeared as a persistent enemy in Ghosts ‘n Goblins — and recast him as a hero in his own right. This second entry acts as a prequel to the original 1990 Game Boy game, depicting Firebrand’s origins as a warrior of the Demon Realm in a story of betrayal, ancient evil and the struggle to restore peace to the underworld. The Game Boy version was released in Japan and carries some unique additions compared to the NES release, including extra stages and new powers not found in the console version.

The game blends two distinct styles of play. On the overworld, Firebrand traverses a map in the fashion of an RPG, visiting towns to gather information from NPCs and uncovering the scope of the threat against the Demon Realm. When enemies are encountered on the overworld or a dungeon stage is entered, the game shifts to side-scrolling action platforming. Firebrand’s movement is one of the highlights of the whole series: he can jump, float, fly, cling to walls, and launch fireballs at enemies, with new abilities and weapons unlocked progressively as the story unfolds. Bosses are tough but fair, and the level design makes excellent use of vertical space. Capcom’s production values shine throughout — the graphics are colourful and detailed, and the music carries the grim tone of the Demon Realm with genuine atmosphere.
For fans of Capcom’s classic output or anyone with a love of action-adventure games from the early 1990s, Gargoyle’s Quest II is a remarkable piece of design that still holds up beautifully. It is smart, varied and far more substantial than most players expect — a true hidden gem of the Game Boy library.
