Game & Watch Gallery 3 is a celebrated compilation developed by Tose and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Color in 1999, bringing five beloved titles from Nintendo’s iconic Game & Watch line of LCD handhelds back to life in vibrant colour. The original Game & Watch devices were released between 1980 and 1991 and were Nintendo’s first foray into handheld gaming — small, calculator-sized single-game devices that combined a simple game with a digital clock and alarm. They laid the foundation for everything that followed, including the Game Boy itself, and the Gallery series celebrated that legacy by presenting both faithful Classic mode recreations and imaginatively updated Modern mode versions featuring Mario franchise characters.

The five main games included are Egg, Greenhouse, Turtle Bridge, Donkey Kong Jr. and Mario Bros., each playable in both Classic and Modern formats with Normal and Hard difficulty settings. In Modern mode the games receive updated mechanics, new character sprites — Yoshi takes the role in Egg, Toad appears in Turtle Bridge — and enhanced music that gives the simple gameplay a surprising freshness. Completing the main five games to a high enough standard unlocks an additional six classic titles including Donkey Kong II, Flagman, Judge, Lion, Spitball Sparky and a mirrored Fire variant, all playable in Classic mode. Players who own the previous two Game & Watch Gallery games can connect via Game Link Cable to import those games’ museum entries into the Gallery 3 database, building a comprehensive archive of Game & Watch history.
Game & Watch Gallery 3 is one of the finest examples of Nintendo celebrating its own heritage — a game that works brilliantly both as a nostalgia trip and as a genuinely engaging collection of score-attack games. The depth of unlockable content far exceeds what the packaging suggests, making this a cartridge that fans continued to play for months after first picking it up.
