For the Frog the Bell Tolls, known in Japan as Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru, is a 1992 Game Boy action RPG developed by Nintendo and Intelligent Systems that holds a remarkable place in gaming history. Released exclusively in Japan for the original Game Boy, the game uses the same engine, sound effects and graphical assets that would go on to power The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening — in fact it predates Link’s Awakening and represents an early prototype of the design language that defined Game Boy action adventures of the era. The story is a delightfully whimsical fairy tale following the Prince of Sablé, who sets off to rescue Princess Tiramisu of the Mille-Feuille Kingdom, racing against his rival Prince Richard of Custard Kingdom to win her hand.

The gameplay combines top-down exploration with side-scrolling dungeon sections in castles and caves, and features the inspired mechanic of the Prince transforming into a frog upon touching water — gaining enhanced jumps but weaker attacks — or into a snake after eating a Hot Springs Egg, which allows him to slither through tight tunnels and convert weak enemies into stepping-stone blocks. The game is filled with playful Nintendo-style humour, including a visit to a kingdom called Nantendo, and its light-hearted tone makes it endlessly charming. Though never officially released outside Japan, dedicated fan translators produced an English patch that brought this beloved curiosity to international audiences, and it remains a fascinating artefact of early Nintendo game design.
