Final Fantasy Legend 3, known in Japan as SaGa 3: Jikuu no Hasha (roughly translated as Lord of Time and Space), arrived on the Game Boy in Japan in 1991 and in North America in 1993. It was the third and final entry in Square’s SaGa trilogy for the Game Boy and marked a significant evolution for the series — one that many fans consider the most accessible and polished of the three. While the earlier games were deliberately abstract and experimental, Legend 3 brings a stronger narrative focus and a more streamlined approach to combat and character progression that will feel welcoming even to players who bounced off its predecessors.

The story is built around time travel, with the player guiding a four-person party — Arthur, Curtis, Gloria and Sharon — across past, present and future versions of the same world. Their mission is to stop a god-like entity called the Water Entity, which threatens to flood all of existence. To do this they must assemble the Talon, an extraordinary vessel capable of traversing different time periods, and collect its scattered components across the eras. The character class system returns: humans level up through experience points, while mutants grow through ability usage in battle. Characters can also transform into monsters by consuming meat dropped by enemies, or into robots by equipping mechanical parts, giving the game a satisfying layer of experimentation. The upgraded graphics and music compared to the first two entries are immediately noticeable, with well-detailed environments and impressive boss designs. A Nintendo DS remake was released years later, and Square Enix brought the original Game Boy version to Nintendo Switch and modern platforms in 2020.
For those who love Square’s classic output, Final Fantasy Legend 3 is a genuine treat — more forgiving than its siblings but no less imaginative. The time-travel narrative gives it a distinct sense of scope and adventure, and the variety of character classes ensures that no two playthroughs feel quite the same.
