Final Fantasy Adventure Nintendo Gameboy Vintage Video Game GB

£12.99

Final Fantasy Adventure, released for the Game Boy in 1991, occupies a genuinely extraordinary place in gaming history — it is simultaneously a Final Fantasy spin-off, the first entry in the Mana series and one of the finest action role-playing games ever produced for a handheld system. Developed by Square under director Koichi Ishii, it was released in Japan as Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden and in Europe as Mystic Quest. The game grew out of a cancelled project called Gemma Knights and was shaped partly by the legacy of an even earlier cancelled Seiken Densetsu concept from 1987. Square released it alongside familiar Final Fantasy touchstones — chocobos, magic materia-like items and the Final Fantasy logo — but the gameplay itself was a revelation: real-time action combat reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda, played from a top-down perspective with RPG stat progression layered on top.

The story follows a hero and heroine as they race to stop the Dark Lord of Glaive and his sorcerer Julius from destroying the Tree of Mana, the mystical source of the world’s life force. The action-RPG format feels fluid and engaging even today, with the player slashing through enemies in real time, levelling up attributes, equipping weapons and magic, and exploring a world that grows progressively more threatening and emotionally resonant. The game earned strong reviews at launch and has only grown in critical stature since, with retrospective assessments consistently ranking it among the best action-adventure games on the platform. Its sequel, Secret of Mana, became one of the most celebrated RPGs of the SNES era, and the franchise continued for decades with remakes and sequels. A full remake titled Adventures of Mana was released for iOS, Android and PlayStation Vita in 2016, and the original is included in the Collection of Mana on Nintendo Switch.

Final Fantasy Adventure is the starting point of a beloved series and a landmark in handheld game design. Playing it feels like watching a genre finding its footing in real time — there is a freshness and ambition here that still resonates over thirty years later, making it an essential piece of any serious Game Boy collection.
