Donkey Kong Country for the Game Boy Color is Rare’s impressive 2000 port of the legendary 1994 Super Nintendo classic, bringing King K. Rool, the stolen banana hoard, and all the platforming thrills of the original adventure to Nintendo’s handheld in vibrant colour. Released in November 2000 in North America and Europe, the port was developed by Rare alongside their GBC version of Perfect Dark, and while it drew heavily on assets from the Donkey Kong Land games to fit within the hardware’s constraints, the result is a faithful and entertaining portable adaptation of one of the SNES’s most celebrated titles.

The GBC version preserves the core adventure of Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong as they battle through jungles, mines, factories and snow-capped peaks to reclaim their stolen banana hoard. Rare also added exclusive content to sweeten the deal, including additional mini-games and compatibility with the Game Boy Printer. The iconic animal companions — Rambi the Rhino, Enguarde the Swordfish and others — remain present, and the game’s trademark momentum-based platforming translates surprisingly well to the smaller screen. For fans of the SNES original who wanted to take the adventure on the road, this Game Boy Color version delivered exactly that.
