Wario Land 3 is one of the defining achievements of the Game Boy Color library — a bold, brilliantly designed platformer that fully embraced everything that makes its anti-hero protagonist unique. Released in 2000 by Nintendo, this third entry in the Wario Land series is often cited as the pinnacle of the franchise and one of the finest GBC games ever made. It took everything the first two portable entries established and elevated it into something genuinely special.
After being sucked into a mysterious music box, Wario finds himself in a magical world ruled by a hidden figure known only as the Music Box Master. In exchange for being returned home, Wario agrees to collect five musical coins hidden across the land. What follows is a sprawling non-linear adventure across 25 richly designed stages populated by inventive enemies and satisfying secrets. The narrative is lean but perfectly serves its purpose: getting Wario into strange, colourful situations where his greed and physical power become tools for exploration.
Unlike Mario, Wario cannot be defeated by enemies — instead, different attacks transform him into bizarre states that change his abilities. This inversion of typical platformer logic is central to the game’s design philosophy and creates a wonderfully unpredictable experience.
Being hit by certain enemies transforms Wario in different ways — he can become Fat Wario (heavier, can crush floors), Flaming Wario (rolling fireball), Zombie Wario (can walk through certain walls), and many more. These transformations are not just hazards to avoid — they are essential puzzle tools that unlock new areas and secret paths.
The game world is accessed via a central overworld map with stages that become increasingly accessible as new abilities are unlocked. Many stages can be visited multiple times, with areas initially inaccessible opening up once Wario gains new transformation abilities. This Metroidvania-style structure gives the game remarkable depth and encourages thorough exploration.
Each stage hides four coloured treasure chests — some obtainable immediately, others requiring abilities unlocked later in the game. Collecting all treasures is a substantial challenge that drives repeated revisits and gives the game outstanding longevity.
The GBC version of Wario Land 3 is visually impressive — stages are colourful and varied, enemies are inventive and well-animated, and the overall presentation feels polished and complete. The soundtrack is a highlight of the entire GBC library, with playful, memorable compositions that perfectly capture Wario’s irreverent personality.
Wario Land 3 is consistently ranked among the top GBC games ever made. Its fresh take on platformer design — inverting the damage mechanic, prioritising exploration over challenge — demonstrated genuine creative ambition and proved that Wario deserved his own franchise identity distinct from Mario.
Inventive, joyful, and endlessly replayable, Wario Land 3 is an absolute GBC essential. If you only play one Wario game, make it this one — it is among the finest platformers Nintendo has ever produced for any handheld platform.
