The game does a superb job of teaching the card game’s mechanics through guided tutorial duels and then steadily escalating AI opponents who make increasingly savvy use of Energy cards, Trainer cards, and Pokémon evolutions. Deck building is genuinely engaging — choosing between aggressive Fighting decks, defensive Water builds, or versatile Psychic strategies creates real replay value as players work to counter different opponents. Victories earn booster packs, medals, and eventually rare promo cards that cannot be found anywhere else. The presentation is charming throughout, with animated Pokémon and smooth transitions that give card battles a genuine sense of excitement.

Alongside the main story, the game features a two-player versus mode using the Game Link Cable, allowing friends to battle with their custom-built decks exactly as they would with physical cards. This was genuinely ground-breaking for a handheld game in 2000, and for anyone who loved the physical card game at its peak, this is one of the most faithful and enjoyable digital adaptations ever made of a trading card game.
