Pokemon Ruby was the headline title of the third generation of Nintendo’s monster-collecting phenomenon, developed by Game Freak and released for the Game Boy Advance in Japan in November 2002 and internationally in 2003. Paired with its counterpart Pokemon Sapphire, Ruby introduced the Hoenn region — a lush, tropical island chain inspired by the Kyushu region of Japan — along with 135 entirely new Pokemon species to discover, train and battle. The generation brought significant innovations to the series including the introduction of Pokemon Abilities, which gave each species a passive skill to shake up battle strategies, as well as Natures that subtly altered a Pokemon’s stat growth, adding a new layer of depth for competitive players.

The Hoenn region was designed to feel distinct and memorable, featuring environments as diverse as volcanic routes, deep-sea trenches, jungle routes and sprawling cities. The story introduced two rival teams — Team Magma and Team Aqua — each attempting to expand the land or sea respectively by awakening ancient legendary Pokemon: Groudon in Ruby’s case, the continent-raising beast whose clash with Kyogre became one of the generation’s defining narrative moments. Double battles made their series debut, allowing two Pokemon to fight simultaneously for the first time and fundamentally changing team-building strategy. The Game Boy Advance hardware let Game Freak produce the series’ most colourful and detailed overworld to date, and the soundtrack by Junichi Masuda is widely considered one of the strongest in the franchise’s history.
Pokemon Ruby is a true landmark of the Game Boy Advance library and a formative game for a generation of players who grew up exploring Hoenn. Whether you are revisiting the Mudkip-or-Torchic debate or experiencing the region for the first time, this is one of the defining portable RPG experiences of the early 2000s.
