The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons is the action-focused counterpart to Oracle of Ages, released simultaneously in 2001 for the Game Boy Color and developed by Flagship under Nintendo’s direction. Set in the land of Holodrum, the adventure begins when the General of Darkness Onox captures Din, the Oracle of Seasons, causing the seasons to fall into chaos and the Temple of Seasons to sink beneath the earth. Link must wield the Rod of Seasons to change the weather at will — turning summer into winter to freeze rivers solid, calling autumn winds to rustle leaves into climbable mounds — in order to navigate Holodrum and rescue Din from Onox’s iron grip.

Where Oracle of Ages demands careful thinking, Oracle of Seasons rewards exploration and combat, with the season-changing mechanic opening up the overworld in endlessly satisfying ways and eight action-packed dungeons to conquer. The game looks absolutely stunning for a Game Boy Color title, with lush, richly detailed sprite work that showcases the best of what the hardware could produce. Like its counterpart, Oracle of Seasons was built with a linked-game password system: finishing both games back-to-back unlocks a final combined chapter that brings together the full scope of Twinrova’s plot. Together, Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages represent some of the most ambitious handheld Zelda design ever committed to cartridge.
